Facts

On Thursday June 24th 2010 in Austin, Gregg Abott the Attorney General of Texas made public the date of James Perry’s execution:
July 1st 2010, 6 PM. Earlier Perry had been sentenced to death by a Texan jury for the murder of Sandra Stotler.

In October 2001 Michael James Perry (19) and his friend Jason Aaron Burkett (19) decided to steal one of the cars – a red Chevrolet Camaro – belonging to the parents of a mutual acquaintance of theirs – Adam Stotler. On the 24th they went to the Highland Ranch housing estate in Conroe (Texas, Montgomery County) to the Stotler villa. Perry, armed with a shotgun, entered the house through an open garage door and waited in the laundry room, while Burkett knocked on the front door, asking if he could use the phone. Later Perry himself knocked on the back door. When Sandra Stotler opened the door, without uttering a single word, Perry shot her in the chest. Sandra fell, and then tried to get up, but Perry fired once again. They wrapped the body into some linen they found in the bedroom and threw it in the nearby Crater Lake.

After it got dark, they returned for the Camaro, but found that the gated estate was closed. Therefore they waited in front of the gate, while Adam Stotler (Sandra Stotler’s adopted son) and his friend Jeremy Richardson arrived home. Burkett and Perry convinced them to go out to the forest, claiming that a joint friend of theirs had had a hunting accident and needed help. According to Perry’s confession, once in the forest, Burkett shot Adam and Jeremy. Following this, Perry and Burkett got into Adam Stotler’s Isuzu, drove back to the Stotler residence and took the Camaro.

On October 30th 2001, while trying to escape arrest Perry and Burkett ran into the car of the Montgomery County Chief of Police with the stolen Isuzu. A gunfight broke out, during which Perry and Burkett escaped to a nearby apartment house, where they were later arrested, and where they found the shotgun that was used to kill Sandra Stotler. Immediately following this, Perry confessed to being guilty of the charges.

The evidence found on the shore of Crater Lake, in the forest and at the Stotler house corresponded to Perry’s confession. Michael Perry and Jason Burkett were charged with the murders of Sandra and Adam Stotler, as well as Jeremy Richardson.

Joyride

Three people died for a car which had got in the possession of the two murderers for less than 72 hours. This is a fact.

However, it might have been the desire to experience freedom that provoked the tragedy – and the joyride only gave occasion to it, while the vehicle ensured the means.

Joyride tries to unravel the controversial issues within the problematics of freedom. It looks for the thin lines separating the desire to experience freedom from unruled and irresponsible behavior; innocence from vice; life from death.

We call experience the event in which one gets aware of the intensity of life. If someone lives through and then remembers an experience, it can engender further desires to relive this intensity. Experience is thus preceded by the image of its associated intensity which is a concentrate of the projected experience itself. In some cases, the desire for experience can be interpreted as an addiction (cf. serial killers).

Let’s take the desire for erotic experience which characterizes all of us on a gut level. Our desire for freedom resides on the very same level within ourselves, is constantly and relentlessly present in us, often creating common sets with transgression and irresponsibility.

The idea of freedom inevitably raises issues like standing outside of the system, parasitism, and lack of self-restraint. Evidently, total freedom cannot be attained while the individual seeks to live according to the established (moral) rule of society.

Paradoxically, freedom is only achievable if the individual evades, ignores, and acts against social standards. A joyride is a – supposedly – innocuous way of getting an experience of freedom.

The reason why Michael Perry and Jason Burkett committed homicide was to “indulge” themselves with this intensity of freedom by snatching a red sports car.

The intensity sometimes ends in tragedy implying an irreversible future. This future is the elegy. Michael Perry was sentenced to death; Jason Burkett faced life imprisonment.

Joyride recounts the story of an absurd murder, a story which was interrupted by the sorcery of reality. The car they killed for was put into a police impounding lot – a kind of cemetery, and there a tree has grown across its body. The tree turned the car into an unsolicited monument. Into an elegiac metaphor for tragedy.

Joyride is a monument for this unsolicited monument.

Every monument is elegiac. So is Joyride.

Október 24-én a conroe-i (Texas, Montgomery megye) Highland Ranch lakóparkba, a Stotler-villához mentek. Perry ekkor maga is kopogott a hátsó ajtón.

A Joyride a szabadság ellentmondásosságának kérdéseit próbálja felszínre hozni.
